NSCI 466 Special Topics, 3-credits

(Neuroanatomy – CNS Dissection)

Instructor: Dr. Mic Dancisak

When: Summer session A2 (May 11 - May 21, 2009)

Time: 10am -2pm every day. Officially 10-noon and 1:30-3:30. Actual time in lab may vary depending upon individual progress.

Course Goal: Extracting intact CNS structures with connecting peripheral nerves. Each student will report on two of the spinal nerves and what areas of the body they innervate. The course will look at specific pathways (afferent, efferent, dermatomes) and discuss related clinical manifestations associated with lesions to the individual nerves. The dissection will attempt to save as much of the initial segments of cranial nerves and will explore the structures with which they communicate. As students progress through the dissection they will identify structures that surround and or cover the CNS, log them in a course notebook and then remove. Grading will be based upon participation, complete notebooks and final dissection results (e.g., did you remove the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves as a single unit in reasonable condition).
